Ice Dams in Vermont: Why They Form and How to Stop Them for Good
Ice dams aren't a shovel problem, they're a heat problem. What actually causes them, the warning signs Vermont homeowners miss, and the fixes that work.

Every February our phone fills up with the same call: water is coming through the ceiling, there's a wall of ice hanging off the eaves, and someone on Facebook said to hire a guy with a steamer. By then the damage is already done. The time to fix an ice dam is in the summer and fall, when you can address the cause instead of the symptom.
Here's the honest version of what's happening on your roof and what actually fixes it.
What an ice dam actually is
An ice dam is a ridge of solid ice that forms along the eaves, the cold overhang at the bottom edge of your roof. Once the ridge forms, snowmelt running down the roof hits the dam, pools behind it, and sits there. Shingles are designed to shed water, not to hold it back like a bathtub. Standing water works up under the shingles, through the underlayment, and into your walls and ceilings.
The stains you see in March along exterior walls and around windows are almost never a "leak" in the usual sense. The roof isn't torn or punctured. It's ponded meltwater finding a path that gravity never intended.
Why it forms: your roof is warm where it should be cold
Ice dams are a heat-loss problem wearing a roofing costume. The upper sections of the roof sit above your heated living space. When warm air escapes into the attic, it warms the roof deck and melts the snow from underneath, even on days when the air temperature is well below freezing. That meltwater runs down until it reaches the eaves, which hang out past the heated walls and stay cold. There it refreezes. Layer by layer, day after day, the ice ridge grows.
That's why two identical houses on the same street can have completely different winters. The one with air sealing, good insulation, and working ventilation keeps its whole roof cold, so the snow just sits there harmlessly until it slides or sublimates. The one bleeding heat into its attic builds an ice shelf.
The warning signs, in order of urgency
Icicles are the one everyone knows, and big ones along the eaves are a real signal, especially if they're thick at the fascia rather than hanging off the gutter. Look also for bare horizontal stripes on a snowy roof, which show exactly where heat is escaping. Inside, check the top-floor closets and the attic after a cold snap: frost on the underside of the roof deck, damp insulation, or a musty smell all mean warm moist air is getting up there. And if you ever see water staining on an exterior wall in late winter, treat it as an active leak even if it dries up in April. The water that got in doesn't leave, it soaks framing and insulation and invites mold.
What actually prevents ice dams
The permanent fix is a cold roof, and it comes from three things working together.
Air sealing comes first, and it's the step most houses skip. Every ceiling penetration, the attic hatch, recessed lights, bath fan housings, and the gaps around chimneys and plumbing chases leak warm air into the attic. Sealing them does more per dollar than anything else.
Insulation comes second. Vermont attics should be at roughly R-49 to R-60, which is 14 to 18 inches of blown insulation. Plenty of older Chittenden County homes are sitting at half that, and the eaves are usually the thinnest spot, exactly where the dam forms.
Ventilation is third. Continuous soffit intake and ridge exhaust keep cold outside air washing along the underside of the roof deck, carrying away whatever heat still sneaks through. When we find ice dam damage on an inspection, blocked soffit vents are the most common single culprit. Insulation stuffed into the eaves chokes off the airflow and the roof edge goes warm.
When we replace a roof, we also install ice and water shield, a self-sealing membrane, along the eaves and valleys. Vermont code calls for it, and we run it well up the slope. Be clear about what it does though: it's the last line of defense that keeps a dam from becoming a ceiling stain. It does not stop dams from forming. A roof that relies on membrane alone still grows ice, still stresses gutters, and still soaks the fascia.
What about heat cables, raking, and steaming?
Roof rakes are fine as first aid. Clearing the bottom three or four feet of snow after a big storm removes the raw material a dam is built from. Just work from the ground and don't scrape the granules off your shingles.
Heat cables are a band-aid we'll install in specific situations, like a tricky valley over a porch, but they treat the symptom, cost you electricity all winter, and shorten shingle life where they sit. If a house needs heat cables along its whole eave line, it really needs air sealing and insulation.
Steaming is emergency response. If water is actively entering the house, a low-pressure steamer is the safe way to open a channel through the ice. Never let anyone chip at a dam with a hatchet or run a pressure washer on your roof, both destroy shingles.
The Vermont math
A serious ice dam event costs real money: interior drywall and paint, saturated insulation, sometimes flooring, occasionally a mold remediation. Insurance often covers the water damage but not the fix for what caused it, so homeowners end up paying for the same failure twice.
